There is a management game played a lot of time to demonstrate one of the most common but critical error that the corporate entities suffer from. The game starts with a group of people sitting in a circle. The coordinator then writes a sentence on a piece of paper and secretly hands it over to one of the participants. He then reads the sentence and whispers the same in the ear of the one sitting on his right hand side. The next person transmits the message to person sitting to his right and same is repeated till the message reaches to the first person. The results are staggering. In almost all the cases the message is not received in its original form. The loss of congruency is known as noise.
The communication is a process which consists of the following steps:
1. Sender: The sender has the message in its original form which he transmits. Message can be in verbal, written or inferred form.
2. Medium: Medium is the mode through which the message is transmitted. It can be air, or electronic media, or paper.
3. Decoding: The decoding is the manner in which the receiver interprets or perceives the message.
4. Receiver: Receiver is the person for whom the original message is intended.
5. Noise: The difference between the original message and the one interpreted by the receiver is known as noise. It can be physical, technical or in any other form.
6. Feedback: The feedback is the reaction to the message from the receiver to the sender. The precision of the feedback is dependent on how well has the message been transmitted along with several other factors. Meaning to say that precision in the feedback is inversely proportional to the extent of noise.
It is noteworthy that noise is generated in every transmission and more the number of transmissions, more the amount of noise and lesser the degree of precision in feedback.
In the corporate entities, noise is perhaps the most critical problem from which most of the
companies suffer. The funny part is that generally people do not realize that it is a problem or even if they do, they fail to realize the criticality of the same. Although there are certain proactive organizations which do take steps towards solving this problem. One way of it is using Gangplank Communication in which the number of transmissions is decreased. Any person can send message to anyone irrespective of his place in the hierarchy. Secondly, some organizations use standardized messages, which have a set pattern for decoding. Going a step further some futuristic organizations are using artificial intelligence to ensure effective communication.
Communication is an inevitable part of modern day organizations, as they are highly decentralized and everyone depends upon others for disposal of his tasks. So the need of the hour is mould our communication skills and keep ourselves abreast with the challenges of information age.
